01 / THE DISTRICT

Weston Creek has two kinds of house, and they need different things

The district was gazetted in May 1966 and the first residents moved in around September 1969, taking its name from Captain George Edward Weston, an early landholder in the area. Cooleman Court opened in 1978 and has been the centre of the place ever since. That gives most of Weston Creek a common starting point: brick-veneer houses on decent blocks, now past their fiftieth year.

Then there is the second layer. The January 2003 bushfires destroyed close to 500 homes across the district, with Duffy hit hardest at 219, and damage through Chapman, Holder, Rivett and Weston. Those streets were rebuilt, so today you get original 1970s houses and early-2000s rebuilds sitting side by side, sometimes on the same block of road.

It matters more than it sounds. A fifty-year-old original needs settled doors adjusted, old plaster patched and timber that has moved for decades brought back into line. A rebuild is now around twenty years old, which is exactly when the first real maintenance falls due: the original paint is tired, the fences are at end of life, and the decks and pergolas need attention. We work on both, and we do not quote one as though it were the other.

We are based in Torrens, immediately east across the parkway, so Weston Creek is a neighbouring district rather than a trip across town.

03 / WHAT WE DO

What we do across Weston Creek

The full range of handyman and maintenance work for homes and rentals across the district. If your job is not listed, call and ask and we will tell you straight.

Gutter Cleaning and Repairs

The busiest job we get on this side of the city. Weston Creek runs up against grassland and eucalypt ridges on its western edge, so gutters here collect bush litter on top of the usual autumn street-tree drop. We clear them out, flush the downpipes, re-fix loose brackets, and tell you what condition the run is actually in.

Doors and Locks

The original Weston Creek houses went up from 1969, which is more than fifty years of ground movement, swollen frames and dropped hinges. Most doors here need adjusting and re-hanging rather than replacing. We also fit deadbolts, handles and strikers, and get sliding doors back on their tracks.

Painting and Wall Repairs

Two different jobs in one district. Original 1970s homes have older plaster that cracks along the same seams every season. The houses rebuilt after 2003 are newer, but two decades on they are due for their first serious repaint. We prep either properly before any paint goes on.

Carpentry and Timber Repairs

Skirting, architraves, handrails, shelving, pergola and deck timbers, and the joinery repairs that older Weston Creek homes need as the frames settle. Handyman-level carpentry, done properly. Anything that needs a licensed builder we say so upfront and point you the right way.

Fencing and Outdoor Repairs

Weston Creek catches the westerly weather coming off the ridges, and fences and gates wear faster for it. We replace palings and rails, re-hang dragging gates, patch paving, and tidy up the outdoor jobs that build up over a few seasons.

Pressure Washing and Driveway Cleaning

Long driveways and wide concrete aprons are common through Weston Creek, and they green up on the shaded southern side over winter. We strip driveways, paths, paving and external walls back properly rather than rinsing them over. Worth doing before a sale or an inspection.

Property Maintenance for Landlords

Weston and Stirling carry a steady rental turnover close to Cooleman Court. We handle exit-report items, make-good repairs, touch-up painting and fixture replacements between tenancies, worked through in one visit and billed on one invoice.

General Maintenance and Installations

TV wall mounts, shelving, blinds and curtain rails, picture hanging, flat-pack builds and appliance installs. The list that has been sitting on the fridge since autumn. Tell us all of it when you call and we knock it over in one visit.

04 / WHY HOMEOWNERS USE US

Why Weston Creek homeowners use us

  • The next district over, not across town. We operate out of Torrens, straight across from Weston Creek. Every suburb here is a short drive, so there is no travel surcharge and we can usually look at a job quickly.
  • Fixed price before we start, every job. Free quote upfront, whether it is one repair or a full list. The number we give you is the number on the invoice, with no hours quietly added afterwards.
  • Fully insured and police cleared. Public liability insurance on every job and an ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration held, which matters if you are booking on behalf of an older parent.
  • We work on the house you actually have. A 1970s original and a post-2003 rebuild need different things. We quote what is in front of us rather than a standard package, and if a job needs a licensed trade we say so before we start.

WESTON CREEK FAQ

Common questions, Weston Creek

Which Weston Creek suburbs do you cover?

All eight: Weston, Waramanga, Stirling, Holder, Duffy, Fisher, Chapman and Rivett. We are based in Torrens, just across in the Woden Valley, so the whole district is a short drive with no travel surcharge. Call 0424 705 056 to confirm your address.

How old are the homes in Weston Creek, and what does that mean for repairs?

The district was gazetted in 1966 and the first residents moved in around 1969, so most original housing is now over fifty years old. That means settled frames, doors out of square, older plaster that moves with the seasons, and timber that has been painted over many times. It is all normal for the age and it is the bulk of what we do here.

Do you work on the houses rebuilt after the 2003 bushfires?

Yes. Close to 500 homes across Weston Creek were lost in January 2003, with Duffy worst affected, so several streets are a mix of original and rebuilt houses. The rebuilds are now around twenty years old themselves and coming up on their first round of real maintenance: repaints, fence replacement, deck and pergola timbers. We work on both.

Why do gutters need more attention in Weston Creek?

The western suburbs back onto grassland and eucalypt ridges, so gutters collect bush litter as well as street-tree leaf drop. They fill faster than a mid-city block and are worth clearing more often. We clear the gutters, flush the downpipes and check the brackets. Clearing gutters is sensible maintenance, not a bushfire safety service, and we will not tell you otherwise.

How much does a handyman job cost in Weston Creek?

Most jobs in the Canberra metro area, including every Weston Creek suburb, are priced between $150 and $180 depending on scope and complexity. We quote a fixed price before anything is booked in. Tell us what you need and we'll give you a number, no obligation.

Can you do several jobs in one visit?

Yes, and across a district of older homes it is usually how it goes. Tell us the whole list when you call, we work through as much as we can in a single visit and send one invoice. It generally costs less than booking separate callouts.
