01 / THE HOMES IN HOLDER

Why Holder homeowners and landlords call us

Holder was announced on 2 July 1970 as one of eight new Weston Creek suburbs and named after Sir Frederick William Holder, Premier of South Australia from 1899 to 1901 and the first Speaker of the federal House of Representatives. Its streets are named after prominent Australian surveyors. At the 2021 census 2,816 people lived here.

Most of the housing went up in a tight window between 1970 and 1972. That is unusual and it matters: instead of a mix of eras, the whole suburb hits the same maintenance milestones at the same time. Frames that have settled over fifty years, plaster that cracks on old seams, original hardware worn out, boundary fences at the end of their life and street trees now tall enough to fill a gutter in a single autumn.

Thirty-one homes in Holder were destroyed in the January 2003 fires, with 219 lost in neighbouring Duffy, so there are rebuilt houses scattered through the older streets. Those are around twenty years old now and coming due for their own first round of repaint, fencing and outdoor timber work.

We are based in Torrens, a short drive east across the parkway, so a job in Holder is a local job for our team.

02 / WHAT WE DO

Handyman services we offer in Holder

The jobs we handle for homes and rentals in Holder and across the Weston Creek suburbs. If yours is not listed, call and ask.

Doors and Locks

Almost every house in Holder went up between 1970 and 1972, so the doors have all aged on the same clock. Frames have settled, hinges have dropped, strikers no longer line up. Most of it is adjustment and re-hanging, and we fit new handles, deadbolts and screen door closers where the hardware is finished.

Painting and Wall Repairs

Fifty-year-old plaster moves with the seasons and cracks in the same places each year. We cut the crack out properly, fill, sand and repaint so it does not reappear by next winter. Interior, exterior and ceilings.

Gutter Cleaning and Repairs

The street trees planted with the suburb are now mature and hang over most rooflines here. We clear the gutters, flush the downpipes, re-fix loose brackets and let you know if a section is rusted through rather than just blocked.

Carpentry and Timber Repairs

Skirting, architraves, handrails, shelving, cupboard doors and the timber trim that early-1970s Weston Creek houses are full of. Repairs matched to what is already there, not replaced for the sake of it.

Property Maintenance for Landlords

Holder sits close to St Jude's and the Montessori school, which keeps a steady family rental market here. We handle the between-tenancy list: exit-report items, patching, touch-up painting, fixture swaps, done in one visit with photos.

Fencing, Gates and Outdoor Repairs

Original boundary fences in this suburb are well past their design life and the gates sag first. We replace palings and rails, re-hang gates so they latch, and tidy up the paving and outdoor jobs that stack up.

Pressure Washing and Driveway Cleaning

Fifty years of concrete gets grimy, and the shaded side of a driveway greens up over winter. We clean driveways, paths, paving and external walls back properly, which is worth doing before a sale or a rental inspection.

Small Jobs and Installations

Shelving, TV brackets, blinds, curtain rails, fly screens, door stops, a tap washer, an appliance install. The list on the fridge. Tell us all of it when you call and our team clears it in one visit.

HOLDER FAQ

Common questions from Holder homeowners

Do you cover Holder and the rest of Weston Creek?

Yes. Holder borders Weston, Duffy, Rivett and Stirling, and we work across the district every week from our base in Torrens. Call 0424 705 056 to confirm your address and a time.

Most houses here are from the early 1970s. Does that change the job?

It sets the job. Holder was announced as one of eight new Weston Creek suburbs on 2 July 1970 and most of its houses were built between 1970 and 1972, so the whole suburb is aging at the same rate. Doors out of square, plaster cracking on old seams, worn hardware and tired boundary fences are the standard list here, and we handle them weekly.

Were homes in Holder affected by the 2003 bushfires?

Yes. Thirty-one homes were destroyed in Holder, alongside 219 in neighbouring Duffy. Those rebuilds are now around twenty years old themselves, so they are coming up on their first serious round of maintenance: repaints, fence replacement, deck and pergola work.

How much does a handyman job cost in Holder?

Most jobs in the Canberra metro area, including Holder and the rest of Weston Creek, are priced between $150 and $180 depending on scope and complexity. We quote a fixed price before booking anything in. Tell us what you need and we'll give you a number, no obligation.

Do you work with landlords and property managers?

Yes. Between-tenancy work is regular for us here: exit-report items, make-good repairs, touch-up painting and fixture replacements. Send the report through and we quote the whole list rather than item by item.

Can you do several jobs in one visit?

Yes, and on a house of this age it usually makes sense. Give us the full list when you call and our team works through as much as we can in a single visit, on one invoice.

Are you insured?

Yes. Public liability cover on every job, and we hold an ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration, which matters if you are booking for a family home or an older relative.
