01 / THE SHORT ANSWER

What a handyman costs in Canberra

A handyman in Canberra charges roughly $55 to $155 an hour, or $120 to $310 for a completed job. Most Polytechnitis jobs across the metro area land between $150 and $180 including GST, depending on scope.

That range is wide because nobody is measuring the same thing. Polytechnitis pulled the published figures from every source ranking for this question in August 2026, read them on the page rather than in the search result, and put them side by side. What follows is what they actually say.

Published handyman hourly rates, read on the source pages 25 August 2026

hipages National, says ACT runs higher $50 to $100 Jul 2026
Airtasker National $80 to $150 Jun 2026
Australian Handyman Directory Canberra $60 to $100 Undated
What's The Damage Canberra $55 to $155 Aug 2026

Two of those 4 are Canberra-specific and 2 are national. Only 1 of them publishes a typical rate: What’s The Damage puts it at $99 an hour, while the Australian Handyman Directory’s range centres nearer $80. hipages, which covers the whole country, notes that ACT handyman costs are typically higher than the equivalent work in NSW and Victoria.

02 / WHY THE NUMBERS DISAGREE

Three different numbers, all of them true

Hourly rates, fixed job prices, and marketplace medians measure different things. Polytechnitis sees homeowners compare all 3 as if they were the same figure, which is where the confusion starts.

An hourly rate tells you what an hour of labour costs and nothing about how many hours your job takes. A rate of $99 an hour is meaningless until somebody has looked at the door.

A fixed job price is the whole number for an agreed scope. Airtasker puts a completed Canberra handyman job at $230 to $310. The Australian Handyman Directory puts a small fixed-price Canberra job at $120 to $200. Both are accurate. They're describing different sizes of job.

A marketplace median is the middle of whatever people happened to book. It skews small, because small jobs are what get posted to marketplaces. Useful as a floor. Not much use as an estimate for a real scope of work.

When a guide disagrees with itself

There's a fourth problem, which is that the guides don't always agree with themselves. One of the Canberra cost guides on page 1 quotes $99 an hour in its summary and $126 an hour in its rate widget, on the same page. That's not a dig at them. The point is just that a number you can't trace back to a scope isn't a number you can budget with, which is why Polytechnitis quotes against a written scope rather than an hourly rate.

The practical version: ignore the hourly rate until somebody has seen the job. Ask for a fixed price for a written scope. That's the only figure you can hold anyone to.

03 / JOB BY JOB

What common Canberra handyman jobs cost

Every row is what that source publishes, verbatim. A blank means the source publishes no figure for that job. Polytechnitis has not filled the blanks in with guesses.

Read the rows, not the averages. Plaster and wall repairs run from $88 to $550 depending on whether it's 1 picture-hook hole or a cracked wall that needs setting, sanding, and 2 coats. Door and sliding door repair runs from $100 to $310 for the same reason: a hinge adjustment and a dropped sliding door with worn rollers aren't the same job. That variation is the honest answer, and it's why Polytechnitis quotes from photos rather than from a rate card.

04 / CALL-OUT FEES

Call-out fees and minimum charges

Published Canberra call-out fees run from $50 to $158. Polytechnitis charges none, because a fee for arriving turns a 20-minute fix into a bad deal for the customer.

The Australian Handyman Directory puts the Canberra call-out fee at $50 to $90 fixed. What’s The Damage puts it at $63 to $158. hipages gives a national range of $50 to $150.

This is the single biggest trap in small handyman work. On a job with 30 minutes of labour in it, a $90 call-out fee can be more than the work itself. It's worth asking 2 questions before you book anyone: is there a call-out fee, and is there a minimum number of hours you have to pay for.

Polytechnitis doesn't charge a call-out fee and doesn't hold a minimum-hours policy. We quote the job. If several small things need doing, tell us the whole list when you call, because working through 5 items in 1 visit is always cheaper than 5 separate visits. That is what our small jobs service is built around.

05 / CANBERRA VS THE REST

Where Canberra sits nationally

Canberra is equal second most expensive of the 12 Australian cities Airtasker lists, at $230 to $310 for a completed handyman job, level with Melbourne and behind only Sydney. Polytechnitis works across the whole Canberra metro area and Queanbeyan at the same rates.

Cost of a completed handyman job by city, from Airtasker’s 2026 cost guide, updated June 2026
CityPer completed job
Sydney $240 to $320
Melbourne $230 to $310
Canberra $230 to $310
Perth $210 to $290
Brisbane $200 to $270
Wollongong $200 to $270
Adelaide $190 to $250
Gold Coast $190 to $250
Newcastle $190 to $250
Geelong $190 to $250
Cairns $190 to $250
Hobart $180 to $240

Canberra sits above Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, and every regional centre on that list, and the rate is the same across every suburb on our Canberra locations page. Airtasker does not publish a reason for the gap, and we're not going to invent one. What it means in practice is simpler: on a mid-sized job, the difference between a well-scoped quote and a lazy one is worth more here than in most Australian cities.

06 / WHAT MOVES THE PRICE

The 6 things that change your quote

Polytechnitis prices on scope, access, parts, height, how many jobs are batched into 1 visit, and whether the work is diagnosable from a photo.

  • Scope. Patching 1 hole isn't the same job as making a wall good enough to repaint.
  • Access. A second-floor window, a locked side gate, or a tight driveway all add time before any work starts.
  • Parts. Standard door rollers are on the van. An obsolete roller has to be identified, ordered, and fitted on a second visit.
  • Height. Anything needing a taller ladder carries more risk and more setup. We work single-storey only, so we'll tell you if a job is above our line.
  • Batching. 5 small jobs in 1 visit costs far less than 5 separate visits, so give us the whole list.
  • Diagnosability. If we can see the problem in a photo we can quote it fixed. If we can't, we'll say so rather than pad the number.
07 / LICENSED WORK

What a handyman cannot legally do in the ACT

Electrical, plumbing, drainage, and gasfitting work always needs a licensed tradesperson in the ACT. Polytechnitis tells you before booking if your job crosses that line.

The ACT Government lists the construction occupations that must be licensed: builder, electrician, plumber, drainer and gasfitter, building surveyor, building assessor, gas appliance worker, works assessor, and plumbing plan certifier. On the same page it states that “trades like carpenters and bricklayers do not currently need a licence in the ACT”.

Be careful with dollar thresholds you find online. At least 1 Canberra directory page states that handymen can do repairs up to $5,000 in the ACT without a licensed builder. That $5,000 figure is the NSW minor maintenance and cleaning threshold, and the ACT Government publishes no equivalent figure on its licensing page. If a quote leans on a threshold to justify the scope, ask which regulator published it.

Where this lands in practice: swapping a light fitting, moving a power point, or anything behind a wall on the electrical or plumbing side is licensed work, and we`ll point you to the right trade rather than take it on. Carpentry, doors, plaster, tiling, flat pack assembly, mounting, gutters, and pressure washing are all ours.

08 / OUR PRICING

How Polytechnitis prices a job

Polytechnitis quotes 1 fixed price for an agreed scope before anything is booked, with no call-out fee. Most Canberra metro jobs land between $150 and $180 including GST, depending on scope.

None

Those are starting points, not fixed prices. What you pay depends on the project and its scope, so send photos and we`ll come back with 1 number. Polytechnitis is a team rather than a single operator, which is the main reason we can usually get someone out within a couple of days and handle several trades-adjacent items in 1 visit.

We're straight about the limits too. We do single-storey gutter work only, we don't take on licensed electrical or plumbing work, and if a job needs a specialist we say so before you have paid anyone. That's worth more to most people than a rate card. Landlords and agents usually book this inside a property maintenance visit instead.

10 / HOW WE BUILT THIS PAGE

Where these numbers came from

On 25 August 2026 Polytechnitis opened every price guide ranking for this question and read the figures off the live page. We did not copy them from Google search results, because 4 of the 4 we checked were out of date there.

That's worth spelling out, because it's the reason the numbers on this page don't match what you will see in a search snippet. The Australian Handyman Directory’s snippet showed $65 to $95 an hour; its page says $60 to $100. The hipages snippet showed $40 to $80; its page says $50 to $100. Snippets go stale and the pages behind them move.

Where a source publishes nothing for a job, this page says so rather than filling the gap with an estimate. Where 2 sources disagree, both figures are shown. Where a claim is about ACT law, it comes from the ACT Government’s own licensing page and nowhere else.

We check these figures every 6 months, or sooner if a Canberra competitor publishes a new rate card. Next review is due February 2027. If you spot a figure that has moved, tell us and we'll correct it.

11 / PRICING FAQ

Handyman pricing questions

How much does a handyman charge per hour in Canberra?

Published Canberra hourly rates run from $55 to $155. Of the Canberra-specific guides, What’s The Damage puts the typical rate at $99 an hour and the Australian Handyman Directory’s range centres nearer $80. hipages notes ACT rates are typically higher than NSW and Victoria. Polytechnitis quotes most jobs as a fixed price instead of by the hour, because a fixed price is the number you can actually plan around.

What is the minimum charge or call-out fee for a handyman in Canberra?

Published Canberra call-out fees run from $50 to $158, and hipages puts the national range at $50 to $150. Polytechnitis doesn't charge a call-out fee. We quote the job, and if it's a 20-minute fix you pay for a 20-minute fix rather than a fee for turning up.

How much does a handyman job cost in Canberra?

Most Polytechnitis jobs across the Canberra metro area are priced between $150 and $180 including GST, depending on the scope and complexity. That's a starting point, not a fixed price. Send us photos and your address and we'll come back with 1 fixed price before anything is booked in.

Why do handyman prices in Canberra vary so much?

Because the published figures are measuring different things. An hourly rate, a fixed price for 1 completed job, and a marketplace median for whatever people happened to book that month are 3 different numbers. Airtasker puts a completed Canberra job at $230 to $310 while the Australian Handyman Directory puts a small fixed-price job at $120 to $200, and both can be right.

Is Canberra expensive for handyman work?

Yes, relative to most of the country. In Airtasker’s 2026 table of 12 Australian cities, Canberra is equal second most expensive at $230 to $310 per job, level with Melbourne and behind only Sydney.

Do handyman prices include materials?

Usually not. Quoting labour and charging materials, parts, parking, and disposal separately is the common arrangement in Canberra. When Polytechnitis quotes a fixed price we tell you what's in it and what isn't, so there's no argument about it on the day.

What handyman work needs a licensed tradesperson in the ACT?

Electrical, plumbing, drainage, and gasfitting work always needs a licensed tradesperson in the ACT. The ACT Government lists carpenters and bricklayers as trades that don't currently need a licence. If your job crosses into licensed work, Polytechnitis tells you before we book it and points you to the right trade.

How do I get a fixed price from Polytechnitis?

Send photos of the job and your suburb. A close-up of the problem and a wider shot of the area is usually enough. Our team comes back with 1 fixed price for the agreed scope before any work is booked in.
