Chapman was established in 1970 and named after Sir Austin Chapman, the member for Eden-Monaro from 1901 to 1926 who held portfolios in the Deakin and Bruce governments. Its streets are named after the Australian film industry. At the 2021 census 2,867 people lived here, on the highest ground in the district at about 631 metres.

Cooleman Ridge and Mount Arawang nature parks run along the southern boundary, so the reserve puts leaf, bark and seed into gutters that a mid-suburb block never sees.
