01 / THE HOMES IN DEAKIN

Why Deakin homeowners call us

Deakin was gazetted on 20 September 1928 and named after Alfred Deakin, the second prime minister of Australia, with streets named after governors, governors-general and diplomats. Development started in the 1920s but the vast majority of the suburb went up after 1945, so the housing here is post-war rather than heritage-era. At the 2021 census 3,124 people lived in Deakin, and 67.9% of dwellings were separate houses.

That mix sets the work. Seventy-year-old brick houses on large blocks have settled frames and doors that drag, plaster that cracks in the same seams each season, and painted timber that has been recoated more times than anyone can remember. Outside, the gardens have had decades to mature, which is good for the street and hard on gutters, fences and paving.

Deakin also carries the institutional edge of the Inner South, with The Lodge on Adelaide Avenue, the Royal Australian Mint and a cluster of embassies and high commissions in the suburb. For us that means a share of leased and rotating tenancies alongside long-held family homes, so the maintenance list is steady rather than seasonal.

We are based in Torrens, and Deakin borders Curtin, Hughes and Garran, so this is a local job for our team, not a trip across town.

02 / WHAT WE DO

Handyman services we offer in Deakin

The jobs we handle for homes and leased properties in Deakin and across the Inner South. If yours is not on the list, call and ask.

Gutter Cleaning and Repairs

Deakin blocks carry decades of tree growth, and a lot of it hangs directly over the roofline. Gutters here fill with leaf and seed rather than light dust, so they need clearing properly. We clear the runs, flush the downpipes, re-fix loose brackets and report what we find.

Painting and Wall Repairs

Post-war homes move, and the plaster tells you where. We cut out the cracks, patch, sand and then paint, inside or out. Ceilings, cornices and older wall boards all get the preparation they need before a brush comes out.

Carpentry and Timber Repairs

Skirting, architraves, doors, handrails, built-in shelving, pergola and deck timbers. Mid-century Deakin houses were built with solid joinery worth repairing, so we work with what is there rather than ripping it out.

Doors and Locks

Seventy-year-old frames have settled, which is why doors here drag on the jamb or fail to latch. We ease and re-hang rather than replace where we can, fit handles, deadbolts and strikers, and get sliding and screen doors back on their tracks.

Fencing, Gates and Outdoor Repairs

Large gardens mean long fence lines and heavy gates that drop over time. We replace palings and rails, re-hang gates so they close on their own, patch paving and clear up the outdoor jobs that accumulate over a couple of seasons.

Pressure Washing and Driveway Cleaning

Wide driveways under mature canopy hold damp and go green on the shaded side. We strip driveways, paths, courtyards and external walls back rather than rinsing them over, which makes a visible difference before a sale or an inspection.

Property Maintenance and Rental Turnovers

Deakin has a steady share of leased and diplomatic-tenancy housing that changes hands on a schedule. We handle the between-tenancy list, repairs, patching, touch-up painting and fixture swaps, in one visit with photos and one invoice.

Small Jobs and Installations

TV brackets, shelving, blinds and curtain rails, picture hanging, flat-pack builds, fly screens and appliance installs. The list that has been sitting on the bench since autumn. Tell us all of it and our team works through it in a single visit.

DEAKIN FAQ

Common questions from Deakin homeowners

Do you cover Deakin and the rest of the Inner South?

Yes. Deakin borders Curtin, Hughes and Garran, all suburbs we work in weekly, and our base is in Torrens a short run south. Call 0424 705 056 and we will confirm your address and a time.

Our house was built in the 1950s. Is that a problem?

No, it is normal work here. The vast majority of Deakin was built after 1945, so most homes are seventy years old or more. Settled door frames, older plaster, painted-over timber and hardware that has worn out are all expected at that age and are the bulk of what we do in this suburb.

Can you handle a long maintenance list on a larger property?

Yes, and on a big block it is the efficient way to do it. Gutters, fences, gates, timber repairs, paving and paint touch-ups can be worked through in one visit. Send us the whole list and we will quote it as a package rather than job by job.

How much does a handyman job cost in Deakin?

Most jobs in the Canberra metro area, including Deakin, are priced between $150 and $180 depending on scope and complexity. We quote a fixed price before anything is booked in. Tell us what you need and we'll give you a number, no obligation.

Do you work for property managers and tenants in Deakin?

Yes. There is a steady turnover of leased housing here, and we handle the between-tenancy work: exit-report items, make-good repairs, patching, touch-up painting and fixture replacements. One visit, photos of the work, one invoice.

Are you insured, and can you provide clearances?

Yes. Public liability insurance on every job, and we hold an ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration. Police clearance documentation can be provided on request, which some properties in this part of Canberra ask for.

What jobs do you not take on?

Anything that legally needs a licensed trade. Electrical work, plumbing behind the wall, gas and structural building work all need the right licence, and we will tell you straight and point you the right way rather than have a go at it.

NEED A HANDYMAN IN DEAKIN?
