01 / THE HOMES IN RED HILL

Why Red Hill owners call us

Red Hill was gazetted on 20 September 1928 and its oldest streets were laid out on 1920s garden city principles, part of the outline plan Walter Burley Griffin prepared for early Canberra in 1918. The roads are named after ships and explorers, Calthorpes' House on Mugga Way has stood since 1927, and at the 2021 census 3,146 people lived here across a suburb where 79.1% of homes are separate houses and only 13.4% are flats or apartments.

That housing mix sets the work. Where an apartment suburb generates shelving and internal patching, Red Hill generates outdoor jobs: long fence lines, decks and pergolas, gates on sloping ground, driveways and paths that green over in the shade, and gutters. The ridge behind the suburb reaches 634 metres and is managed as part of Canberra Nature Park, and the streets below it are heavily treed, so roofs here collect leaf and shed bark for most of the year rather than in one clean autumn drop.

Inside the houses it is the usual story for stock this age. Timber doors and windows that swell through a Canberra winter and bind in the frame, plaster that has cracked where the house settled, hardware worn past the point of adjusting. Most of it is a repair, not a replacement, and our team would rather match the original detail than introduce something that looks wrong beside it.

02 / WHAT WE DO

Handyman services we offer in Red Hill

The jobs we handle on established houses, big blocks and garden-city streets. If yours is not listed, call and ask.

Gutter Cleaning and Downpipes

Red Hill sits under a ridge that is managed as part of Canberra Nature Park, and the streets below it are heavily treed. Gutters here fill with eucalypt leaf and bark faster than most of Canberra. We clear the runs, flush the downpipes, check the falls and tell you where water is going once it leaves the roof.

Outdoor Timber, Decks and Pergolas

Big blocks mean decks, pergolas, screens and long fence lines, all of it exposed to frost and full summer sun. We replace failed boards, refix loose bearers and rails, straighten gates that have dropped, and repair the sections that have gone rather than quote you a rebuild.

Fences, Gates and Retaining

Sloping blocks below the ridge move over time, so gates stop latching and palings work loose. Posts refixed, palings and rails replaced, gates rehung and adjusted so they swing and catch properly again.

Doors, Windows and Locks

Garden-city homes here still run original timber. Doors bind after a cold winter, windows swell and stop latching, strikers no longer line up because the frame has moved. We ease, plane, re-hang and adjust, and fit new handles, strikers and deadbolts where the old hardware is finished.

Painting and Wall Repairs

Interior patching, cracks in older plaster, deep skirtings and picture rails that show every rushed edge, plus exterior touch-ups on eaves, fascias and window frames. We prepare properly, cut in by hand and protect the floors until the last coat is off.

Carpentry and Timber Repairs

Shelving and storage built into rooms that were designed before anyone owned this much, plus repairs to original architraves, skirtings and cupboard carcasses. The point is to match what is already in the house, not to introduce something that looks new next to it.

Pressure Washing and Outdoor Cleaning

Driveways, paths, paving and patios go green on the shaded southern sides under mature trees, which is most of Red Hill. Cleaned back without blasting the surface or forcing water where it should not go.

Small Jobs and Odd Repairs

A torn fly screen, a tap washer, a light fitting swap, a mirror hung straight, a sticking window, a gate latch that no longer catches. Give us the whole list when you call and our team clears it in one visit.

03 / WHERE WE WORK

Red Hill and the Inner South

Red Hill sits between Griffith and the Woden Valley, with Forrest to the north, Narrabundah east and Garran and Hughes over the ridge. We cover the whole of Inner South Canberra, so if you are in a neighbouring street we are already working nearby.

04 / WHAT TO EXPECT

What you can expect

  • We plan for the trees. Under the nature park, gutter and outdoor work is a seasonal job, not a one-off. We tell you when the next clear is actually due instead of selling you one every time we visit.
  • Fixed price, quoted before we start. Free quote upfront, whether it is one gate or a full pre-winter list. The number we give you is the number on the invoice.
  • Insured, with paperwork on request. Public liability cover on every job and an ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration. Certificate of currency available before we attend.
  • Straight about scope. If the job needs heritage approval, a licensed roofer, an electrician or a plumber, we say so upfront instead of starting something that has to be undone.

RED HILL FAQ

Common questions from Red Hill homeowners

How often do gutters need clearing in Red Hill?

More often than most of Canberra. The Red Hill ridge is managed as part of Canberra Nature Park and the streets below it are heavily treed, so roofs here catch eucalypt leaf and shed bark all year rather than in one autumn drop. Most Red Hill homes want a clear before storm season, and a second one if the property sits directly under mature gums.

Do you work on the older houses in the Red Hill heritage precinct?

Yes. The Old Red Hill precinct reflects 1920s garden city planning and was part of Walter Burley Griffin’s 1918 outline plan for early Canberra, and Red Hill itself was gazetted on 20 September 1928. Heritage status normally affects external and structural changes rather than an internal repair, but it is worth knowing before work starts. If your job looks like it needs approval, we will say so before we begin.

Can you repair a deck or pergola instead of replacing it?

Usually yes, and that is the first thing we check. Most of what fails on a Red Hill deck is a handful of boards, a loose bearer connection or a rail that has moved, not the whole structure. We replace what has gone and refix what is sound. If the framing itself is unsafe we will tell you that plainly rather than patch over it.

Are the blocks here too big or steep for a handyman visit?

No. At the 2021 census 79.1% of Red Hill homes were separate houses, most of them on established blocks, and long fence lines and sloping ground are normal for us. It does affect scope, so tell us what the access is like when you call and the quote will reflect the real job.

How much does a handyman job cost in Red Hill?

Most jobs in the Canberra metro area, including Red Hill, are priced between $150 and $180 depending on scope and complexity. We quote a fixed price before anything is booked in. Tell us what you need and we’ll give you a number, no obligation.

Do you do roof work?

We clear and repair gutters, downpipes, fascias and the fixings around them, and we handle exterior painting touch-ups at that level. Roof sheeting, tiling and anything structural is a licensed roofer’s work and we will point you to one rather than take it on.

Are you insured?

Yes. Public liability cover on every job, and we hold an ACT Working with Vulnerable People registration. If you or your agent want a certificate of currency before work starts, we can send it through.
